Training Your Brain

Brain WavesI have always been fascinated by the brain. When I began homeschooling my kids 13 years ago I started researching the brain, and continue to be intrigued by how it works, and how we can harness its abilities to improve our lives.

One of my recent experiments is with binaural beats and isochronic tones. Basically, the concept behind these is to use sound to force your brain into specific “states” for the purpose of changing your behaviour or your habits. So, for example, there are tones/beats that help you sleep, concentrate, energize, relax, reduce stress, heal, and secrete specific hormones.

Discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, they were only intermittently looked at until 1973 when Gerald Oster published an article entitled “Auditory Beats in the Brain” (Scientific American, 1973). Currently they are part of the newest “success trend” and so one must be a little careful about the promises made!

Currently I listen to a series of tones when I go to bed at night in order to create the best sleep possible. I also use them when I am doing projects I hate that need detailed focus – like lesson prep and the family budget! I like them on the plane when I travel to keep relaxed but alert, so I arrive at my destination in the best physical and mental state possible, and I use them before stressful events to calm myself down.

Currently there are companies that are using brainwave entrainment (the use of tones to change behaviour) to create interesting products on the market. The ones that come most highly recommended seem to be:

  1. Holoysnc
  2. Learning Strategies and

I’ve personally not tried these yet, and am in no way affiliated with them. I just put them here in case you’re looking for more resources.

You can find out a little more information about this topic on the following sites:

  1. The Top 10 ways that brainwave entrainment can enhance your health
  2. Isochronic Tones – How They Can Benefit You
  3. Binaural Beat Research & Science

You can download a whole selection of binaural beats and isochronic tones for free to try yourself, here: and there are even several iPod apps you can try as well: Brainwave Apps

Now, please note that these brainwave tools are often used for more “new age” purposes, but I believe that the brainwaves themselves are neutral, and with just about anything of this nature, they can be used for whatever purpose you please. I, personally, have found them very helpful. If they make you nervous, by all means, leave them alone.

If you enjoyed this article, I’d be delighted if you’d pass it on! Thanks!
